One of the best things about Berkey water filters is how long the filter elements last. But they don't last forever, and knowing when to replace them is key to making sure your water stays clean and your system performs at its best.
Here's everything you need to know about Berkey filter replacement.
Black Berkey Purification Elements
Each pair of Black Berkey Purification Elements has a rated lifespan of approximately 6,000 gallons. For a family of four using about 1 gallon per person per day, that works out to roughly 4-5 years before replacement is needed.
If your system holds more than 2 elements, the lifespan is calculated per pair. So 4 elements in a Big Berkey means 12,000 gallons total capacity — potentially doubling the time between replacements.
Signs It's Time to Replace Your Black Berkey Elements
The most obvious sign is a slowdown in flow rate that doesn't improve after re-priming the filters. Over time, the micropores in the Black Berkey Elements can become clogged with contaminants. Priming them (which essentially back-flushes the pores) usually restores flow. But if you've primed them and the flow is still slow, it's time for new ones.
Other signs include an off taste returning to the water, visible discoloration, or simply hitting the 6,000 gallon mark based on your usage tracking.
How to Prime Black Berkey Elements
Priming is the process of forcing water through the filter elements to clear out manufacturing dust and open up the micropores. You should prime your filters when you first install them and any time the flow rate drops.
Using the priming button (included with your Berkey system or available separately), press the button against the stem of the filter element and run water through it under your faucet for about 60 seconds per element. You'll see the exterior of the filter start to "sweat" — that means water is flowing through properly.
PF-2 Fluoride & Arsenic Filters
The PF-2 filters have a shorter lifespan than the Black Berkey Elements. Each pair handles approximately 1,000 gallons, which translates to roughly 12 months for a family of four.
Since PF-2 filters use an alumina-based media to attract and bind fluoride and arsenic, they eventually become saturated and stop being effective. Unlike the Black Berkey Elements, you can't re-prime them — once they're spent, they need to be replaced.
Keeping Track
The easiest way to track filter life is to note the date you installed them and estimate your daily usage. A simple reminder on your phone calendar at the appropriate interval can save you from running overdue filters.
